Year 6 Class Update
Dear Year 6 Parents
We have had a busy half term and the children have demonstrated our school values in many different ways.
We enjoyed a wonderful visit to the British Wildlife Centre and the staff there commented on Beech Class' excellent manners, behaviour and kindness towards each other. The facts we discovered about our precious wildlife and their habitats strengthened our understanding of the importance of protecting their environments. We all loved the animals, particularly the little hedgehog and the rescued, hand-reared owl who loved Nando's!
We have continued with our topic 'Frozen Kingdom', researching aspects of the Titanic and its doomed maiden voyage. This culminated in a diary writing journey with thoughtful and effective results. Children are now able to use a wide range of grammatical devices and vocabulary choices and evaluate their impact on the reader, whilst articulating the features specific to this genre.
In maths, we completed our geometry and statistics topics and then had valuable revision time to practise ways to solve multi-step problems using visual representation.
We also wrote beautiful poems inspired by William Wordsworth's 'I wandered Lonely as a Cloud', accompanied by delightful watercolour paintings. We continued with this media for our arctic paintings, focusing on tone and shade.
In PE we are developing cricket and athletic skills, and the children who took part in recent football matches did us proud.
This week has of course been SATs week, with each day beginning with an additional breakfast: an opportunity to chat with friends and begin the day positively and calmly. Timed assessments inevitably result in some nerves and the children showed fantastic resilience and determination. We are very proud of their commitment and focus.
It was great to see so many of you at parents' evening to discuss the significant progress the children have made this year.
We look forward to continued hard work in the months ahead with our 'Gallery Rebels' topic, enterprise project and more...
Do continue to read with the children at home on a daily basis and discuss new and effective vocabulary as well as examples of inference, which then enhance the quality of their written work..
With best wishes
Mrs Dowsett, Mrs Lowes and Mrs Johnson
