Apple Class Update - Spring 1

It has been a fantastic half term of learning in Year 1. The children have loved our Moon Zoom learning theme and have been able to share their knowledge of different astronauts brilliantly in history. They also shared their understanding of the 1969 moon landing in their non-fiction reports. I hope you enjoyed reading them at home, the children were very excited to share their writing with you.

Next half term our learning theme is ‘Heroes’. Our enquiry question will be ‘what impact do we and others have on our community?’. Our history learning will focus on Rosa Parks and Emily Davison. We will be learning about who these individuals are and why they are significant.

In art we will be learning different drawing techniques to draw city scape silhouettes using pastels, and in science we will be looking for the signs of Spring, comparing Spring to the other seasons.

Superworm by Julia Donaldson will be our focus text in English. The children will focus on writing a letter to Superworm, as well as writing a story from the perspective of one of the minibeasts that Superworm saves. We will continue to focus on applying our phonics in our writing, and consistently using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in each sentence. This writing unit will be a great opportunity for the children to expand their sentences with adjectives and conjunctions such as ‘and’ and ‘because’.

Our maths learning will begin with numbers up to 40, looking at the place value of 2-digit numbers. We will then be focusing on multiplication and division within the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, before moving on to fractions.

Thank you for your continued support and I hope you have a restful half term holiday.
